Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a health profession that empowers children and their families to overcome barriers in their everyday lives. Through solutions based on individual needs and strengths, occupational therapists help children to participate more fully in their homes and communities.

Occupational Therapists at KidsInclusive are licensed practitioners under the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. OT’s at KidsInclusive are supported by therapy assistants, who may assist in carrying out treatment plans that have been created by the OT with the child and family.

KidsInclusive is committed to continued education for therapists to ensure they provide quality, up to date services to children and their families.

At KidsInclusive, the OT will work with the child, family, other team members, and community partners to identify and address problems that are identified together in carrying out everyday activities.

Assessment

OT services at KidsInclusive will begin with a screening or assessment to better understand your child’s skills and needs based on their current physical, developmental, and sensory abilities. The OT will look at the match between your child’s skills and the expectations placed upon him/her at home, day care or school, and in the community.

Intervention

Services at KidsInclusive are based on a team approach that ensures a shared understanding of the needs of your child and family. An individualized plan for intervention will be developed for your child based on assessment findings and discussion with you and your child’s team about shared goals. Practical suggestions may be made to help your child develop new skills or to use equipment that will make everyday tasks easier for him/her. Recommendations of changes to your home or your child’s day care or school environment may also be made to optimize your child’s performance in that environment. OT intervention at KidsInclusive may be offered through consultation services, individual or group therapy sessions, or parent workshops.
