Augmentative Communications Services

Augmentative Communication Services (ACS) provides services for children and youth aged 0-19 years old whose communication, either written or verbal, is not meeting their daily needs at home. We help provide specialized equipment to those who are in need of augmentative and alternative methods of communication (AAC).

Augmentative Communication Services includes speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, technicians and therapy assistants.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can be anything that takes the place of speech or written communication. An individual may learn to communicate using alternative methods such as picture boards or a device that has speech output. Also, a child who has difficulty with traditional writing, using paper and pencil, may learn to use a computer with specialty software and hardware to complete homework and support other written communication needs.

Important Information About iDevices and ADP funding:

While many families are interested in using an iPad for communication, it is not the best option for everyone. Depending on individual needs, a simpler device or a non-technology-based system, such as a communication book, may be more appropriate.

If you choose to purchase a communication device (such as an iPad with a communication app) before completing an ACS assessment, please note:

• ADP will not reimburse the cost of a device purchased independently.
• If the purchased device serves the same communication function, ACS clinicians cannot prescribe a second device through ADP.
• ADP funding for iPads is available only when the iPad and an ADP-approved communication app are prescribed together as a bundle – ADP will not fund an app alone.
