Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Workers

KidsInclusive is pleased to host two Ministry of Children and Youth Services funded FASD Worker positions – two for Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington and two for Lanark, Leeds & Grenville.

FASD Workers support families of children and youth with FASD by leading the development of a strengths based support plan for children/youth with FASD or possible FASD.  The FASD worker will work with the family, service providers and educators to build capacity for supporting the child/youth up to the age of 18 (or 21 if still in school) in family, school and community life.

FASD System Navigator Role

The FASD Worker can provide the following supports for children/youth with FASD, or suspected FASD and their families:

  • Advocating for and connecting families with FASD-informed services and supports
  • Developing a strengths-based support plan based on individual strengths, needs, and goals
  • Supporting families through the FASD assessment process and provide information/education as post-diagnosis support
  • Assisting with funding applications [Disability Tax Credit, Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD), and Special Services At Home (SSAH)] if eligible
  • Consulting with community partners about FASD-informed care and best practices
  • Providing and promoting FASD awareness, information, education, and resources
  • Providing an FASD-informed lens and advocate during meetings at school, community appointments, and other services as needed
  • Supporting the transition to adult services

FASD 8 Magic Keys

The Rural FASD Support Network – Rural FASD Support Network of Eastern Ontario consists of staff with personal knowledge of, and experience FASD, based in the rural areas of Eastern Ontario. Their purpose is to connect and provide caregivers and individuals impacted by FASD with appropriate local supports. These supports are in collaboration with medical professionals, community service providers, support groups, local media, researchers, educators, as well as government ministries and representatives.

FASD Parent Action Group of Southeastern Ontario – This is a parent led Facebook group based out of Kingston.

FASD ONE (Ontario Network of Expertise) – Membership includes experts and specialists in research, health promotion, diagnosis, justice services, education, community and policy development, and service delivery as well as family members who have intimate knowledge of the practical needs of individuals with this disability. Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

CanFASD – Canada FASD Research Network is a collaborative, interdisciplinary research network, with collaborators, researchers and partners across the nation.

FASD Medication Algorithm – A decision-tree style medication algorithm to guide prescribers as they see patients with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder/Neurobehavioral Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (FASD/ND-PAE).

The FASD Success Show – FASD podcast hosted by caregiver turned world FASD educator, Jeff Noble. Interviews and conversations with researchers, families and others. Kids Brain Health Network – a national network of researchers and health professionals dedicated to helping children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families. We fund collaborative research, train the next generation of developmental neuroscientists, and mobilize our findings for impact.

Voices: FASD & Housing in YukonBrendan Preston Production July 15, 2020. The film focused on several individuals with FASD and their struggles in the context of finding and maintaining housing in the Yukon. The finished film was presented at a national symposium being hosted here in Whitehorse, which was attended by Social Workers, policy makers and NGO’s, and the feedback was incredible.
